Motenashi Kuroki

On a hot summer Friday night, we had a chance to try this place that specializes in Shio-flavored ramen.  It was one of the few ramen places that looked good, was open at night in Akihabara and judging by the line that had already formed at the side of the restaurant and down the street, looked to be quite popular.  We excitedly waited for our turn.

As we stood in line, the ramen shop’s concierge came around to ask for the number of people in the party and to explain when to go to front to purchase a ticket from the ticket machine inside the shop.  There is also English on the menu to help choose what to order.

Fox ordered the Special Shio Soba (特製塩そば) and I ordered the Shio Tsukemen (塩つけ麺) with a side order of Shumai.  For the Special Shio Soba, you can also choose the type of noodle – thin or handmade.  Fox chose the thin noodles.

As we waited, rain started to fall and as quickly as the rain started, the concierge moved swiftly through the line handing out umbrellas to everyone waiting.  It was a thoughtful touch.  The line moved fairly quickly and soon we found ourselves seated at the counter watching the kitchen hustle and bustle.

We were immediately served the shumai.  With a touch of ginger on top, it was delicious.  Next, Fox was served the Special Shio Soba in which the soup uses their signature chicken base.  The broth was lightly salted and matched well the noodles, chicken slice, and shrimp wontons.  The mountain of green onion on top complemented the entire bowl nicely.

My Shio Tsukemen arrived shortly after and it was a delight to see the presentation.  The beautiful lines from the noodles were expertly placed alongside the chicken, green onion and tomato in a ceramic bowl.  I almost didn’t want to ruin it, but I was ready to eat!  The chicken broth seemed similar to the Special Shio Soba, but paired well with the dipping noodles.

Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant and we will definitely be heading back soon to try more items from the menu.
